Video Game Vocab

T loves video games. He has and will play any video game there is. From DOA Beach Volleyball to Paper Mario to Grand Theft Auto to I don’t even know. He’s probably played hundreds of different games in his short 23 years. He is currently the proud owner of a Wii and an Xbox 360. He’s owned practically ever different gaming system there is. If he wasn’t so broke, he’d probably own a PlayStation 3 right now too. I myself have never been a big fan of video games. When I was younger I had much better things to do. Like chase cows, climb hay bales, throw rocks into ponds, you know, exciting-living on the edge type stuff. Video games never crossed my mind. Once in a great while I will play an actual video game with T. My faves are Guitar Hero and…that’s it.

Although T has access to a myriad of games and numerous gaming systems, he keeps coming back to one particular game. Ever since I’ve known him, he’s been a Halo player. For those of you who don’t know, Halo is a first person shooter game (are there really 2nd and 3rd person games?). It’s one of the most popular games out there. That’s pretty much all I know. I’ve tried to play this game, but it requires hand-eye coordination.

T plays this game over Xbox Live. Xbox Live requires high speed Internet access. You can instantly connect with thousands of other players across the globe. T really is a social gamer. He rarely plays with himself…video games that is. Xbox Live is his perfect match. It allows him to not only play Halo with strangers, but it allows him to play Halo with life long pals from back home. His bff, G, is also a Halo player. Since Halo is a team game it requires concentration and communication among team members. T and G have recently been holding nightly sessions of Halo. Luckily, I’m addicted to the net and don’t mind my TV being commandeered for video games. I love listening to what the boys have to say to each-other during the games. Luckily for me, T’s headset (yes, you have to wear a headset) is broken and I get to hear the whole convo through the television. I have been keeping track of some of the commonly used words and phrases that hear throughout the Halo games. I’d like to share this with you all, ’you all’ being the very small number of people who may read this blog. In the future, Video Game Vocab, will be a very popular segment on my very popular blog and all the cool people will be reading it. So here is the first installment of Video Game Vocab.

*note: these are actual, unaltered murmurings of two grown men playing Halo 3.

I hope you enjoyed the first installment of Video Game Vocab. I have to keep repeating the title of this segment because it could easily be confused with gay porn. We wouldn’t want that now would we?
