Earth Hour

In case you didn’t know today is the day to “celebrate” the worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour. Earth Hour is where you turn all of the stuff in your home off (lights, television, computers,) from 8 p.m.-9 p.m. in your local time zone.

Now don’t go thinking I’m on some sort of ecologically friendly high horse. I only realized that this huge event was happening because of the Google homepage. They are just so cool! But, I think it’s a worthy cause and it’s good that the Earth Hour has figured out ways of saving energy seem ‘cool.’ You can register online if you’d like to participate in Earth Hour or you can just do it secretly in your own home.

I’ve experienced a few power outages in my day and let me tell you-it sucks! It’s like you’re shut off from the world. You can’t check you email. Your mom tells you not to open the fridge and let all the cool air out. It’s miserable. But the folks at Earth Hour have come up with a few ideas about what you and your pals can do during that one hour of darkness tonight.

I personally will not be doing the “Clean Up Your Neighborhood.” Walking the streets of Houston with a flashlight while picking up trash doesn’t really say “I’m saving the Earth.” It’s more like “I’m homeless please come beat me up!”

Now I know all you pervs out there are thinking of another activity that is done in the dark that Earth Hour failed to put on the list. Go for it-but don’t impregnate anyone or you kind of blow the effect considering that you’ll be bringing another energy guzzler into the world.

I’m not guaranteeing that I will be participating in Earth Hour today, but I have taken one small step to reducing my impact. I’ve started recycling paper! I even got my office to start recycling their paper! You’re welcome Mother Earth!!! Now get off my back.
