Because I Can

I like to say that I’m not the kind of person who judges a book by it’s cover, but I can’t say that.  I usually make assumptions immediately.  Yes, I know this is an awful, horrible, not very nice, habit.  I know!  But I honestly think that everyone does it.  Oh…you don’t do that?

Anyway…

I do it.  People watchingis a favorite past time of mine.  Since I’m living in the giant city of Houston, that means that I have a much bigger selection of ‘characters.’  T’s sister, Amanda likes to refer to unique people as characters.  It’s clever really, and it has stuck with me.  Last time she was here, she took a picture of this guy.  He was a ‘character.’

Now, I know I probably shouldn’t be posting pictures of people I don’t even know without their permission but…ya know.  If I knew where this guy lived I would for sure send him a photo release form to take care of the legalities.

Moving on…

As much fun as people watching can be, sometimes I like to add a little spice to it.  I like to think about these people and make up little stories about them.  Yes, I’m super lame and have way too much time on my hands.  Nevermind the fact that it’s rude and not nice.

As you will recall, T and I attended the annual Art Car Parade.  If you’re looking for an entire cast of characters, then that is the place to go.  Artsy fartsy things usually bring the characters out of the woodwork.  Nothing against all you artsy fartsy folks out there, but you know what I mean.

I’m not the type of person who really expresses themself through the way that I dress or my accessories, but some people are.  They are the ones I like to make up stories about.  The special ones.  The ones who are trying so hard to stand apart from the sameness of our society.

And I thought today would be a good day to talk about this girl:

She can be seen here skateboarding down the street during the Art Car parade.  ALthough she wasn’t exactly screaming, “Look at Me, Look at Me,” I couldn’t help but take her picture.  She is so City.

  Skater Girl

*Note:  If you are in fact this girl, please disregard the following information.  And I’m sorry for pigeonholinging you.  I”m sure you’re a lovely, multi-faceted, individual.  :)

Ok…I’m not going to really make up a story about this girl.  But I will present you with a myriad of random facts that I feel represent this girl.  Ready?  Ok!  (Btw, I said that like a cheerleader.  Ready!?  OK!.  Lot’s of enthusiam and cheesy smiles)

Name:  Lucy  (for some reason the name, Lucy, just eminates from this chick)

Hometown:  Houston, TX.  She lives in a small, loft apartment that’s full of thrift store furniture.

Age:  23.  But she likes to think that she’s as wise as a 68 year old woman.  She has always acted older than she really is.

Favorite Color:  Gray.  She feels rebellious when she tells people that since it’s not really a color.  Well kinda.

Favorite Food:  Fried Tofu salad.  She’s a vegetarian, duh.

Favorite Brand of Clothing:  NONE!  She hates the fact that people enjoy wearing brand name clothing.  Like I said before, she shops at the thrift shop.  All of her clothing has been previously worn for at least 4 years by another person.  She also likes to alter the clothing from the thrift stores to make it extra unique.

Glasses or Contacts:  Glasses. Cat eye glasses.

Occupation:  Starving artist.  She doesn’t want to be conformed by the rigors of corporate society.  She makes her money on her own terms.

Hobbies:  Reading.  Writing songs (she’s also learning to play the guitar).  Writing her blog (bloggers are a little kooky).  Sewing and crocheting (remember she alters her thrift store finds).  Ebay(ing).  Painting self portraits.  And yoga.  It helps keep her zen.  She also enjoys political buttons and skateboarding as you can see from the pic.

Aspirations:  She would like to become a member of the Houston Rollerderby team, but is afraid that she might get hurt.  Do it Lucy!!!  Kick some ass!  She would also like to become an organic farmer, but that’s far far into the future.

Favorite Music Genre:  Ska of course.  But also has a secret passion for polka.

Boyfriend?:  No boyfriend yet. She’s still not sure if she wants to fall into the trap of a man.  She considers herself to be completely heterosexual although she likes to hold hands with her bff Thunder Cloud.

Other random facts:  Lucy recycles everything!  She only buys her produce from the local farmer’s market.  She has also worked with Habitat for Humanity.  She volunteers at the local animal shelter.  And of course she has adopted 4 cats, whom she’s named after Greek gods and goddesses.  She’s an atheist, although she was born Baptist.  She has fallen victim to Apple’s marketing ploys.  Shes is the proud owner of an IPod Nano and an IPhone.  Both have been bedazzled with pink rhinestones.  She loves photography and is a big fan of the Polaroid camera.  She is pissed that they are going to discontinue the Polaroids and started a protest via the Internet.  No…she doesn’t watch TV.  She doesn’t even own a TV.  Although she and her friends do enjoy going to the movies like The Rocky Horrow Picture Show during the midnight showings.  Whenever she poses for a picture she gives the peace sign with her hand.  But not the 2008 sideways peace sign, the straight up, original 60’s peace sign.

So that my friends is an overview of Lucy.  Lucy was an unsuspecting person that I just happened to snap a picture of.  I’m sure that all of this information is false and that Lucy does in fact enjoy a good hamburger once in a while.

And Lucy…thanks for being you…whoever you may be!

:)

Happy Hump Day!

  1. Okay. I have to say, reading your post has made me happy in so many ways! It was just something innovative and fun, and– well, funny. And “character watching” is not as uncommon as you think. Unless I’m just another weirdo.

  2. Lucy would so fit in with Houston Roller Derby, especially since her fave color is gray (one of HRD’s travel team’s colors).

  3. Mckenzie…I’m glad that this made you smile. And I’m not sure yet, but you make just be another wierdo just like me. :)

Catazon…During the Art Car Parade, when all the derby teams were there I totally thought about trying out for a team. Then I remembered that I can’t skate. :(

  4. Check out our website for info on our rec league. We have some wallhuggers out there, working on their skills and hoping to make it to the big leagues (LOL).

  5. she certainly is making a statement……and one i appreciate….skating around the car parade…..she’s awesome if she’s as you’ve described….which she pry isn’t.

  6. Probably not…
