Pyrotechnics

I hope all of you had a nice Fourth of July.  It was extra nice since it happened to fall on a Friday.  I hope you were able to enjoy a three day weekend.  As I said before, T and I went downtown (Eleanor Tinsley Park @ Buffalo Bayou) to the “Chevy Freedom Over Texas” festival/music/thing.  Since we’re super hip city folk now we feel kinda obligated to participate in these festival type things.

The event began ran from 4-10 p.m.  T and I arrived about 4:30 ish.  It was a hot and humid day-no surprise there.  Friday was the last day that T and I would get to spend together before his return to Nigeria on Saturday.  So we of course wanted to have a nice time.

And although i have to say that we had a nice time-the heat and humidity puts a damper on the mood.  Well my mood at least.  I have been telling myself that I don’t mind this Texas heat, but then I realized that it’s because I’m usually sitting on my ass in the air conditioning.  The heat/humidity is a killer when you’re trying to walk around through crowds and enjoy the surroundings.  ButI pushed through it after T gave me a few of those “What’s wrong honey?” guilt trip-suck it up and enjoy yourself questions.  It was so crowded and there were screaming kids everywhere.  Between the two of us we spent $46.00.  And we didn’t even have any beers which were going for $5 each!

And then there was the issue of the folding camp chairs.  T suggested that we bring chairs to sit in since there was very limited seating.  Good…I don’t want another fire ant episode.  Unfortunately we had to carry the chairs.  Eww.  I saw plenty of guys carrying their womans’ chairs around, but not T.  He insisted that I carry mine.  What doesn’t kill me will make me stronger.  Whatev.  So that just made me even sweatier carrying around that heavy chair.  We did use the chair to watch a little bit of beach volleyball, but that was it.  We sat on a dangerously steep hill to actually watch the fireworks so we couldn’t use the chairs.  Next year we will bring a cushion or a beach towel.  So I blamed the heat exhaustion on the fact that T suggested the camp chair that I had to haul around.  I blame everything on him.  :)

The main entertainers were:  Jo Dee Messina, Miranda Lambert and Sara Evans (who-btw was married 2 weeks ago and her hubby came out on stage and he’s a total babe).  We were able to watch the concerts on a big screen while we sat on the hill waiting for the pyrotechnics to begin.  I would have to say that Miranda Lambert was the best entertainer.

The mayor, who was the MC for the evening stated that there were over 17,000 people in attendance.  Dang.

After the sweating and drinking and walking and eating (deep fried pizza-I’ll blog about that later) we settled down to watch the fireworks.  Really-the whole reason for attending the festival.  I love fireworks and this is the best show that I’ve ever seen.  Than again, the only thing I have to compare it to is my hometowns fireworks which are less than stellar.  The show was awesome with two shows going on at once and loud music.  Made you proud to be an American.  Proud to live in a country where we blow crap up to celebrate our nations independence.

Here’s a video of the finale of the fireworks show.  I apologize for the fact that I decided to turn my camera mid video.  Just turn your monitor on it’s side.  :)   That’s easier than me trying to figure out how to fix that little issue.

***Ok-so I just realized that my video may or may not have been showing when I originally posted this.  But I think it’s all better.  World crisis avoided.

Here’s a few more shots of the evening:

I’m sure a thousand people sprained an ankle going up and down that hill.

I love mounted police!  Well-I should say I love horses.  These just happen to have police riding on top.

Thank god my camera has a ‘fireworks’ setting.  I’d have no idea how to manually take these pics.
