Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

I’m sorry honey, but I’m not talking about you.  Although I am missing you very much.

I’m talking about cows.  I grew up on a dairy farm and had been around cows my entire life before moving to Houston.  I’ve always considered myself a country girl and still do even though I’m stuck in the city.  And although I do enjoy the city (most of the time) I have dreams of living on a little farm somewhere where I can have a menagerie of animals and never have to interact with humans ever again.  Except through the virtual world.  The Internet makes human interaction so much more enjoyable.  Haha.

Back to the cows.  I have never really thought of cows as one of my favorite animals.  I enjoy watching them and think it’s nice to see a field of cows along the roadside, but they aren’t my number one animal.  The cows that I’ve been around my whole life are Holsteins.  They are are known as the classic ‘black and white’ cow and are one of the highest milk producing breeds.  Here’s a pic of one of the mommas on the farm:

Moo

Moo

See…black and white.  I think since I grew up around these cows and saw them virtually everyday, they sort of became something that I didn’t care too much about.  I wasn’t like, “ohhh-cows!!”  Kwim?

Moving to Texas meant that I wouldn’t be able to look out my window and see the cows.  Or hear them mooing when I was trying to sleep.  Or find them looking into the front door after a late night escape from their pens.  I never thought that it would be something that I would miss in a million years.

But I do.

And now I’ve turned into one of those people who shrieks with joy when I see a field of cows.  But here in Texas you don’t see the boring black and white Holsteins around every corner.  Actually, I don’t think I’ve seen a black and white cow since I’ve been here.  But I have seen plenty of brown cows.  Brown Texas Longhorns to be exact.  Longhorns are awesome.  So much cooler than Holsteins.  I’ve suddenly turned into a cow lover.  I think it has to do with the fact that cows sort of connect me with country life while I’m stuck in the crazy, bustling city.  They remind me of what I took for granted and what I want to have again someday.

Saturday I took Hurley to the nearby dog park.  The route to and from the dog park takes me past a field of Longhorns!  It’s so neat to see them in the City.  On my way home I saw that a few of the cows were close to the road, so I stopped to take a few pictures.  For once in my life, I didn’t have my camera with me-but I did manage to get a few shots of them with my phone.  Normally, my pictures are so much more professional.  Ya right!

Look how cute they are!!!!!!!!!!  :)

That is the cutest calf I’ve ever seen!  He wouldn’t come close enought to let me pet him though.  :(

What an adorable little family.

Longhorns will definitely have a place on my little farm someday…if only in my dreams.  :)

Hope you have a nice Monday.

J

  1. Julie, how on earth can you LOVE cows? They are only good for eating!!!! Now, you want to talk beauty, get some horses. They are a beautiful piece of God’s work. I just LOVE my “kids”..I now have 4 to take care of!!!!! I guess you could say I “collect them”…

  2. I enjoy the unique breeds that you can find all over Texas. But my true love is for horses. The first animal on my farm will be a horse. Followed by longhorns, donkeys, goats…

    :)

Animals are the best kind of kids to have!

  3. I’m with you - cows, horse, dogs, cats … any critter puts a smile on my face! I even move snakes off the road so they won’t get run over. My neighbors think I’m nuts. They’re probably right.

  4. I too was raised on a dairy farm - Jerseys not Holsteins but…
There is nothing like a real milk milkshake!
Although I must confess milk straight from the cow wasn’t for me.

But definitely cows over horses (what are those people thinking?) ;)

  5. Go see Bobby Dube in Round Top, Tx….he has a riding Longhorn Steer (Buckaroo) that is just awesome!

  6. I will have a riding Longhorn Steer someday! :) I will have to check him out.
