My Future Backyard

This past weekend on my adventure downtown I was finally able to visit the new Discovery Green park.  Check out their website for more info www.discoverygreen.com

Anyway..I just thought I’d share a few pictures that I snapped while I was there.  Mind you, this was sort of an unplanned visit to the park.  It just happened to be directly in front of the convention center that I was going to.  So I sorta had to walk through it.  But I’m glad I did.  It’s so mod and fun and clean looking.  Although you wouldn’t know it by the way I have decorated my own apartment, I love that look.  Clean lines, simple.  My apartment has a style that I like to call cheap ass/sorta looks good.  If I had lots of money my mansion would probably be a mix between modern and antique stuff.  But if I had lots of money I would probably hire a professional to do the actual decorating.  I’d just pick paint colors and eat chocolate bars all day long.

That’s the George R. Brown Convention center in the background.  I just happened to stumble upon the park.  Don’t think that I actually planned it.  My main objective was driving to the convention center without getting lost or dieing.  Seeing the park was just a bonus.

Technicolor Dream Wall

Technicolor Dream Wall

This really caught my eye!  It would be a great spot for photos and I actually saw a few photos of wedding parties who had their pics taken there.  Dang, I do have an eye for style.  I didn’t get up close to touch it so I’m not sure if the tiles are plastic or glass or what.  Can you see how they are all different levels?  There’s a linear wooden structure behind the wall and I don’t really know what that was.  Maybe it was a restroom?

Wait…it’s probably on the well designed, informational website.  Duh.

Nationally acclaimed artist Margo Sawyer’s installation graces both exits of the underground garage, with accents at The Grove and The Lake House. The 151 panels hold 1,500 aluminum boxes in 65 colors. The paint on these boxes is also used in under water applications for oil rigs and was gifted by International Paint LLC. Some elements are kamelion car paint color and also Dicroic film, a new technology and application.”

Nice.

Why is my font a light grey?  Can you still read it?

That’s better.  I’m real good with comepewters.  Really I yam.

That is pretty cool.  It was designed by Jean DeBuffet.  Thanks Jean.  You’re rad.
Straight as an arrow

Straight as an arrow

This was a lovely wooden path that lead through the park.  I took this path back to my parking space.  I just love how everything is in perfectly straight lines.  The wooden structures, the plants, the trees.  It’s unexpected for a green space.  Houston seems to do a good job of keeping green spaces in the city.  It’s always nice to have somewhere nature(y) to go, even when you live in the urban jungle.  Did I just say naturey?  Hmm…  Merriam Webster would be proud.

Unfortunately at this point (leaving the convention center) I was lugging around 87 pounds of crap and was tired and sweaty and trying to take pictures with one hand and my shoulder was hurting and it still hurts and I needed caffeine.  But I don’t like to complain.  :)

The pond was really nice too!  That’s a little dock that you see in the distance.  And that’s Minute Maid park way back there.  I haven’t been there yet.  But soon.

So go visit the park!  Enjoy the modern, linear designs.  Take your dog.  Take your kids.  And although you might be inclined to make them walk in a perfectly straight line.  Let go.  It will be ok.

Happy Hump Day!
