Surviving my first hurricane! Bring it IKE!

Hey Everyone…

I know that I will probably have a million hits on PLSF today since everyone will be worried about me and will want to see what I have to say about the hurricane.  Ok…maybe not.  But I’m glad that YOU’RE here.  You’re the only one that really matters.

Hurricane Ike madness is in full force.  I really wasn’t paying much attention to the hurricane business until yesterday.  After Gustav fizzling out and countless others that haven’t even brought any rain to Houston, I was sort of non-chalant about Ike.  Until I attempted to fill up my car with gas early yesterday morning.  Of course my car was close to E, so I knew that I needed a fill up.  The first gas station had a line of cars out to the road.  The second one I tried was out of gas.  I didn’t have to go too far to find a station that was available, but that sort of gave me the indication that something big might be on its way.

I pretty much did nothing at work yesterday.  All of our trips and activities were cancelled.  I left at about 2:30 p.m. and headed home.  Traffic was insane and it took me quite a while to get home.  Even though I live like 3 miles away.  I was scheduled to go look at another house with our Realtor.  Yes, that was a stupid idea to even attempt to drive somewhere in the traffic.  It took me an hour to get to his office!  Luckily, there was almost no traffic on the way home so I made it home rather quickly.  On my way home I stopped at the mail store to mail a package.  Remember, I’m in charge of T’s online “store” while he’s away.  Again, I probably should have just went home, but I had to mail the package.  I attempted to take a little short cut back home to avoid the crazy traffic.  Bad idea.  There was a huge accident block all the lanes.  Fire trucks and ambulances were everywhere.  I don’t really know what happen.  I didn’t see any carnage.  Luckily, the people behind me were smart enough to back up to allow us to get turned around.  Thank goodness.  After I got home I took Hurley for a nice long walk.  The weather was so nice yesterday.  I don’t think it’s supposed to get bad/rainy till Friday evening.  After the walk I decided to go to the nearby grocery store to stock up on some food.  I had plenty of H2O, but almost no food.  Why didn’t I have any food?  Because we’re penny pinching and before T left we were on this kick where we didn’t do any grocery shopping.  We were going to eat the food that we had until ALL of it was gone.  This was his idea to begin with, but I got on board after I realized that we did have a lot of that food that just sort of never goes away.  Of course the very day that I’m pretty much out of food is the same day that a huge storm is coming.  Don’t believe me?  Take a peek inside my fridge….

Yogurt, Egg Beaters, Water, Slim Fast Shakes, Cheese, Natural Peanut Butter, Pickles, Parmesan Cheese, and some condiments.  T will probably tell me that my shopping trip was unnecessary as I could have survived on BBQ Sauce and Miracle Whip alone for at least a week.  The freezer was just as bare, holding only a few frozen dinners and some Popsicle’s.

I didn’t stock up on a lot of fridge food for the hurricane because I’m assuming we will lose power and that would do me no good.  But I did get some non-perishable stuff like Wheat Thins, apple sauce, canned fruit, Pop-Tarts, granola bars, etc.  I spent $75.00 but there were a few non-hurricane items in there like microwave popcorn.  Useless in a power outage, but I needed some.  I wanted to get a loaf of bread…there was none.  I wanted to get some cans of tuna…none!  I bought two cans of salmon instead.  The shelves were pretty bare, but I was able to get plenty to sustain myself.  If I would have had a large family I would have been screwed.  But then again, if I had a large family I would have food and probably be more concerned with our safety and wouldn’t have waited till last minute to get food.  I’d be a good Mom.

Here’s a rather blurry shot of the bare shelves at the store.  This was the chip aisle.  Because we all know that chips are high in nutrients and vitamins???

I didn’t buy any chips.  I tried to stick with the healthier things.

When I mailed the package for T earlier in the day, I walked past a Little Cesar’s Pizzeria.  I knew I HAD to take a pic of the sign on their door and share it with you.

Are you open?  No…We Close.  I am so happy that this sign caught my eye!  It totally made my day.  I was so overjoyed with the ridiculous sign that I almost missed something equally amazing…..

Sand bags

Sand bags

There were a bunch of what I thought were sandbags lining the inside of the Little Cesar’s.  After a second glance I realized that they weren’t sandbags.  They were bags of Pizza flour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I love it so much!  I don’t know if flour has the same water blocking abilities as sand.

I will be doing some Twittering tomorrow if anything exciting starts happening.  Read my Twitters over there ——————–>  Even if the power goes out I will keep updating as I can do it via my phone.

And don’t worry about me…I’m ready to kick Ike in the face!  And thank goodness I have such wonderful neighbors, Pam & Quintin.  They have given me the low down on the hurricane and what to do.  They said that if I need anything to just knock on their door.  I’m guessing that they’ve probably got enough supplies to last ten people ten weeks.  Lol.  I was a little worried, but now that I know that my neighbors are all staying and that they can feed me if need be-I’m ready!  I’m ready to “ride it out” as these folks say.

I plan on enjoying my day off of work and am looking forward to listening to the rain.  If it gets really nasty then I will give Ike the finger to show him that I ain’t skirred.

Check back for updates on my first hurricane.  I’m kind of excited.  In an, “I might die” sort of way.  ;)   Did I mention that my other half is a million miles away in Africa.  I wish he was here and I’m sure he does too.  I know he’s jealous that I get to be the first one to experience a hurricane.  :)

Stay safe!

  1. Hey! Just wanted to let you know I was thinking of you… watching Ike news on the CNN. I like the sign at Little Caesars… you should see the manual for an MP3 player I got from China. It begins with “Welcome to choose our produce. Functions and performance may change without prior notice.”

Say hi to Anderson Cooper for me!

  2. haven’t checked in with the news yet, but hope Houston’s still on the map (only because you live there)……
