Funky Plant

This funky plant was given to me by one of my residents.  This particular resident is a plant freak.  As in you can’t even see the door to her apartment because it’s surrounded by plants.  It looks like a cluttered, jumbled mass of jungle fever.  But this lady knows exactly where one plant ends and the other begins.  And unlike myself-she actually knows how to take care of the plants.  I stopped by her apartment one day when I saw her out watering her plants.  Within a few minutes I had learned more about plants than I had in my entire life.  I also came home with a bag full of cuttings of various plants.  Great!

I almost didn’t pot the cuttings based on my past history with potted plants.  I’ve killed lots of them.  But this particular plant excited me and I knew I wanted to try to grow it myself.  It’s called a Rope Cactus.  Cactus is something we didn’t see much of back in Michigan so it’s unique and interesting.

This plant started out from a small group of the cuttings.  It has grown fast and there’s always new little thingies popping up all over.  It looks poky but it’s not.  It almost feels like plastic or something rubbery.

You can see the end of the thingy (what the heck do you call that?).  The little thingies that are stuck in the dirt have roots, but all the little armie thingies just have rounded ends.  Stick them in the dirt and they grow!

Due to my care and love…this little plant has flourished.  Suddenly one day these cute little flowers started popping up all over.  They are a real deep burgundy.

I think eventually I’m going to take some of the little arm thingies and grow another pot of them.  It’s just too cool.

Today’s question:   Do you have a green thumb?  I’ve killed plenty of plants before so don’t be afraid to tell the truth.  :)

Have a nice Saturday everyone.

  1. At least Hurley hasn’t destroyed that one yet!

  2. hmmm….what do you call plants that do that…..thinking back to botany, but only am remembering the hot teacher…..fuck….i’tt’l come to me.

  3. No green thumb for me! The number of plants I have killed is too extreme for me to put down on a blog! I have been starting slow again. I got 2 potted plants on sale early this summer and they are doing great…knock on wood! I just recently got an ivy that has been on my entertainment center that I haven’t watered since I got the poor thing and its still alive! Its crazy, I can remember to feed and water the kids and dogs but the plants get nothing. Hmmm I think this will be a new chore for the kids…water Mom’s plants!
